Ministry of Education and Culture Conducts 54th International Literacy Day in Makassar

Jakarta, Kemendikbud --- The Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) is ready to hold a series of activities commemorating the 54th International Literacy Day (HAI) on 5 to 8 September 2019. The peak of the HAI commemoration will be held on 7 September 2019, at Karebosi Field , Makassar, South Sulawesi.

The commemoration of the HAI was held as a manifestation of Indonesia's commitment to eradicating illiteracy, and carrying out international commitments set by the United Nations (UN).

Furthermore, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) set 8 September as International Literacy Day. "By commemorating International Literacy Day we can strengthen the commitment of all educational stakeholders, both at the central, provincial and district/city levels in completing illiterate," explained the Director General of Early Childhood Education and Community Education, Harris Iskandar, at a press conference on the preparation of the 54th HAI Commemoration, at the Ministry of Education and Culture office, Jakarta, Thursday (29/08/2019).

The theme of the 54th HAI carried by UNESCO is "Literacy and Multilingualism". Referring to the theme, the Ministry of Education and Culture set the national theme for this year's HAI commemoration as "Local Cultural Diversity and Community Literacy". "With this theme, we hope that literacy education programs can take advantage of opportunities from cultural and linguistic diversity," said Director General Harris.

In commemorating HAI, said Director General Harris, the Ministry of Education and Culture also promoted policies and programs to accelerate the completion of illiteracy in Indonesia through the National Literacy Movement program. "Through this momentum as well as our efforts to support UNESCO to remind the consensus of the countries that are members of UNESCO to take concrete action in combating ignorance, backwardness and poverty through the completion of illiteracy and community empowerment to advance world civilization," he explained.

The 54th HAI series of activities consist of the Indonesian Literacy Festival, an exhibition of PAUD and Dikmas superior products, an evaluation meeting for the implementation of the Literacy and Equality Education Program, a literacy education workshop for remote/special indigenous communities, technical guidance on continuing education, a workshop on acceleration of accredited non-formal education units, and education and culture exhibition.

In addition to these activities, at the peak of the commemoration of the HAI, awards will be given to various parties who have contributed in the literacy field, including the awarding of literacy for district/city governments, awarding literacy for literacy activists, awarding of isolated/special indigenous community leaders, creative TBM awards/recreation, literacy awards for basic literacy students, and literacy awards for independent business literacy students.

Furthermore, there will also be awards given to women activists, Community Learning Activity Center (PKBM) awards, institutional Learning Centers Learning Centers, literacy video publications awards, literacy publications awards in print and online media, video and photo literacy competitions, awards for students and courses training, award for outstanding courses and training institutions, awards for PAUD and Dikmas caring partners in the DUDI/BUMN category, PAUD and Dikmas caring partners awards for organizations/foundations.

There are six regencies and one city that will be awarded at the peak of the 54th HAI commemoration, namely Balikpapan City, Mentawai Islands Regency, West Lombok Regency, Central Lombok Regency, Bone Regency, South Timor Tengah Regency, and Tangerang Regency. (IT)
